The History and Evolution of Sarees: From Ancient India to Modern Times

The saree, known in ancient India as the sari or chadar, has a long history dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization and described in Hindu sacred text Rigveda (1500 BC). It has evolved from a simple piece of cloth to a garment that reflects cultural and social norms and has come to embody the traditions and values of those who wear it. During the Maurya and Gupta periods, the saree became more refined, and in the Mughal era (16th to 19th century), it became more elaborate and was decorated with embroidery, gold/silver thread, and other embellishments. The British Raj introduced new fabrics (cotton, silk) and the saree blouse and changed the way it was draped (Nivi style). Today, there are multiple ways to wear the saree and a variety of fabrics, colors, and styles are available, including through online shopping. The saree has become a fashion statement and popular among non-Indians. Learn more about the history of saree from here.
